How to Use Google Keyword Planner [Complete]

What is Google Keyword Planner?

Google Keyword Planner is a keyword research tool included in the Google Ads service.  Basically, this tool was created for the purposes of creating ads on Google Ads.  However, you can also use it for other purposes, namely SEO keyword research.

As one of the features of Google Ads, you must first register for Google Ads to use Google Keyword Planner.  However, don't worry, you can use Google Keyword Planner without having to advertise on Google.

How to Register for Google Keyword Planner

As mentioned earlier, there are two ways to sign up for Google Keyword Planner.  If you really intend to use Google Keyword Planner as well as Google AdWords, you can create Google AdWords first following this guide.

However, if you just want to use Google Keyword Planner, you can follow the guide below:

 1. Open Google Ads
 Select the Tools menu > Keyword Planner

 2. Create New Account
Create a new account for Google Ads by clicking New Google Ads Account

 3. Select the Google Ads Destination
There are three choices of Google Ads destinations.  First, direct searchers to call your business.  Second, direct searchers to your business website.  Third, direct searchers to visit your business location.

 Choose the one that best fits your business

 4. Enter Business Information
Since in the previous step we chose to redirect searchers to the website, in this step we need to populate the business website.

 5. Define Consumer Reach
Next, you need to determine the consumer reach for your ad.

 6. Define Search Target
In the next step, you need to specify in which search the ad will appear.  In this tutorial we created a bookstore business, we chose a search related to books.

 How to Use Google Keyword Planner

By confirming the email above you will be automatically directed to the Google Ads dashboard.  To use Google Keyword Planner, click the Tools menu in the upper right corner and select Keyword Planner.

Google Keyword Planner provides two main features, namely Discover New Keywords and Get Search Volume and Forecast.  Here's how to use both features.

 1. Discover New Keywords
There are two ways to find suggested keywords in Google Keyword Planner.  The first way is to enter the keywords you want to research.  Enter keywords related to the topic on your website.

For example, below we have entered keywords around hosting, websites and domains.  Google Keyword Planner limits a maximum of 10 keywords in one research.  After entering all the keywords, click Get Result.
